I recently had a number of SIP phones that were previously configured with Skype for Business (and before that Lync!) that needed to be converted to Microsoft Teams (with Multi-Factor Authentication). There is so much information around the conversion process to digest, so I figured I’d write this guide for those in a similar situation who just need the essentials. To begin the migration you’ll need to re-provision the devices and activate the devices in the Microsoft Teams Admin Center.
You also will need to enable “SIP devices can be used for calls” for your current policy. To do this, Navigate to Microsoft Teams Admin Center. From the sidebar select Voice > Calling policies > Global (Org-wide default) (or whatever policy you wish to change). Scroll down until you see SIP devices can be used for calls and enable the toggle switch (by default it will be off).
Navigate to the phone’s web configuration page (typically access via it’s IP address) and sign in.
Firmware update the phone to the latest release from Yealink. This can be done from the Settings > Upgrade page.
On the Status page, note the phone’s MAC address (will be entered in Teams Admin Center later on).
Factory Reset the phone (this is recommended in the Microsoft SIP Gateway guide– initially I didn’t factory reset and the phones has problems making outbound calls).
Navigate to Settings > Auto Provision and enter the Server URL http://noam.ipp.sdg.teams.microsoft.com
(if you factory reset your unit you can ignore all other fields, only the server url needs to be set).
Click Confirm to save your changes, then refresh the page and select the Auto Provision Now button.
The phone will show the text “Firmware Update”, and then an installation screen as the update downloads and installs.
Once the device finishes rebooting, add a new SIP device on the Microsoft Teams Admin Page: https://admin.teams.microsoft.com/devices/sipdevices
Go the Remote Provisioning page: https://admin.teams.microsoft.com/devices/remoteProvisioning
Add a new device. Enter the phone’s location and the MAC address you noted earlier.
The new device will be added. In the “Waiting on activation” tab, click the checkbox next to the device name, then select Generate verification code.
The phone should should a Microsoft Teams logo as the background, like so:
Dial *55*123456
(where 123456
is the verification code from the step generated above)
Then press the Call button on the phone.
The phone should show a connection screen, ring a few times and then it will automatically end the call.
When the call has ended refresh the Provision devices page in Teams Admin
The device will no longer appear in the “Waiting on activation” tab
Click the “Waiting for sign in” tab
The device should appear in the list, Select the device, then click Sign in a user
The dialog will prompt you to follow these instructions:
Have the user open https://aka.ms/siplogin in their browser, then enter the SIP code from their device (or from the webpage above).
Alternately, you can use the Sign In option on the physical handset. This will prompt the user to visit the same URL listed above, and sign in with a code given on the handset’s screen.
